BanG Dream![a] also known as Bandori is a Japanese media franchise created in January 2015 by Bushiroad, with original story by Ko Nakamura and original character designs by Hitowa. It consists of the musical group Poppin'Party, which was formed in February 2015, music CD's, live concerts, card games, multiple manga, anime television series, and a rhythm game called Bang Dream! After the initial creation of Poppin'Party in 2015, new bands came in the franchise in 2017 with the launch of the mobile game with Afterglow, Pastel*Palettes, Roselia and Hello Happy World being created. Between those, only Roselia much like Poppin'Party also has a musical group with voice actress of the characters being on a unit as a real band and using the same instruments of the fictional characters. At the end of 2018, a support band called The Third had its name changed to Raise a Suilen, with characters being created for the franchise and its members becoming voice actors of them on the second season of the anime.
The first anime season was produced by Issen (OLM with Bushiroad) and Xebec, and aired between January 21, 2017 and April 22, 2017.[3][4]
The series was followed by a second season that aired between January 3, 2019 to March 28, 2019, and a third season that will air in January 2020.[5] In 2018, it was confirmed that Sanzigen would take over the series from Issen and Xebec for the second and third seasons.[6] It was also confirmed that in 2018, Sanzigen would also be animating the spin-off series BanG Dream! Girls Band Party! ☆ Pico with DMM.futureworks, and Pastel Life would be done by Studio A-Cat. The series will also receive a new film titled BanG Dream! Plot[edit]
The series revolves around Kasumi Toyama, a high school student with a happy-go-lucky personality. She is initially excited that she got admitted into a prestigious high school. But in reality, she is actually looking for the 'Star Beat', a sparkling and exciting sound which she heard while looking up at the night sky during her childhood days. Ever since then, she is constantly searching for something that will stir her spirits up.
One day, while returning from school, she comes across a pawnshop owned by one of her classmates. In the storage area, she finds a strange star-shaped guitar with glittery stickers on it. Without knowing, she immediately decides to form a band after witnessing the performance by a band called 'Glitter☆Green' at a live house. She then recruits four of her classmates: Saya Yamabuki, Tae Hanazono, Rimi Ushigome, and Arisa Ichigaya. Despite their initial misgivings, they reluctantly agree to form a band called 'Poppin'Party'. By overcoming many hurdles and solving some of their personal problems, Kasumi eventually finds the excitement that she had been looking for.
Characters[edit]
Poppin' Party[edit]
- Formed by Kasumi Toyama in her journey to rediscover an excitement she felt. Although their raw skill is not considered the best, they make up for this with their strong energy and innate connection between each other. Their name references the 'popping' theme of their band and music.
- Kasumi Toyama (戸山 香澄Toyama Kasumi)
- Voiced by: Aimi[7]
- A first-year student at Hanasakigawa Girls' High School and the lead singer and first guitarist of Poppin'Party who plays a red ESP Random Star. Active and optimistic she is always looking for a heart-pounding, sparkling sound. She has wanted to start a girl band ever since she laid eyes on her red, starry guitar at the pawnshop owned by Arisa's family. Her sister is a year younger than her, but sometimes it is hard to tell who is the older of the two.
- Tae Hanazono (花園 たえHanazono Tae)
- Voiced by: Sae Ōtsuka[7]
- Nicknamed 'O-tae,' she is the second guitarist of Poppin'Party and a first-year student at Hanasakigawa Girls' High School. A skilled guitarist who's been playing since she was little, she loves music and works part-time at a live house, the money from which she saved up to buy her blue guitar. She tends to take things at her own pace, and can be surprising and weird at times. She lives with her mom, dad, and 20 rabbits whom she treats like her children. She bonded with Kasumi during Home Ec and taught her the beginning chords for guitar.
- Rimi Ushigome (牛込 りみUshigome Rimi)
- Voiced by: Rimi Nishimoto[7]
- The bassist of Poppin'Party, a first-year student at Hanasakigawa Girls' High School, and the younger sister of Yuri Ushigome of Glitter☆Green. On the day of their high school entrance ceremony, Kasumi's bright and cheery self-introduction made Rimi want to get to know her more. She tries not to be so shy and anxious, but hasn't had much luck so far. Her pink bass was a hand-me-down from her older sister. She loves the chocolate cornets from Yamabuki Bakery and chocolate (outside of mint chocolate) and sweets in general. Kasumi calls her 'Rimi-rin.'
- Saya Yamabuki (山吹 沙綾Yamabuki Sāya)
- Voiced by: Ayaka Ōhashi[7]
- The drummer of Poppin'Party and a first-year at Hanasakigawa Girls' High School. Saya made friends with Kasumi at their high school entrance ceremony and the two have eaten lunch together every day since then. A kind-hearted soul, she always tries to be a good friend to Kasumi. On top of her high school studies and the band training, she helps out at her family's popular business - the Yamabuki Bakery. She has a brother, Jun, and sister, Sana, who are a lot younger than her. Saya used to play in a girls' band in middle school until her mother fell ill.
- Arisa Ichigaya (市ヶ谷 有咲Ichigaya Arisa)
- Voiced by: Ayasa Itō[7]
- The keyboardist of Poppin'Party and a first-year student at Hanasakigawa Girls' High School. Arisa's grandmother runs the pawn shop Ryuseido. She is very much an indoor girl who likes taking care of her bonsai trees and looking at stuff online. She does not go out much, but is incredibly smart and gets very good grades at school. Her sharp tongue causes her and Kasumi to butt heads quite a bit, though around other people (and outside of her band members) she tries keeping up the appearance of a rich and refined girl.
Afterglow[edit]
- A band formed between Ran Mitake and her childhood friends. They have a 'rough-around-the-edges' aesthetic, and their music follows a rebellious theme. The name comes from the English term for the effect on the sky following a sunset.
- Ran Mitake (美竹 蘭Mitake Ran)
- Voiced by: Ayane Sakura
- The lead singer and guitarist of Afterglow who is a first-year student at Haneoka Girls' High School. Ran's family has a 100-year history as experts in ikebana. She is strong-willed, hates losing, and gets lonely easily due to her awkward and aloof nature. Her friends and family are more important to her than anything else.
- Moca Aoba (青葉 モカAoba Moca)
- Voiced by: Sachika Misawa
- The second guitarist of Afterglow and a first-year student at Haneoka Girls' High School. Moca is entirely indifferent to things she does not have interest in, but will do just about anything for her friends, especially Ran whom she's particularly close with. She likes to focus on one thing at a time, and playing the guitar is her focus now. She also loves manga and the buns from Yamabuki Bakery. Moca has a habit of calling herself 'Moca-chan' when she's feeling really confident, and loves to give nicknames to her friends and the people around her.
- Tomoe Udagawa (宇田川 巴Udagawa Tomoe)
- Voiced by: Yōko Hikasa
- The drummer of Afterglow and a first-year student at Haneoka Girls' High School who is also Ako's older sister. Tomoe is a candid girl who never badmouths others and carries no regrets. She plays an important role in keeping Afterglow forward. She gets along well with the adults in the shopping district, playing the taiko drums for them in local festivals. Just like her younger sister, she has a weak spot for fashion. Outside of the band, Tomoe works part-time at the fast food store. Moca calls her 'Tomo-chin'.
- Himari Uehara (上原 ひまりUehara Himari)
- Voiced by: Emiri Katō
- The bassist and leader of Afterglow and a first-year student at Haneoka Girls' High School and a member of their tennis club. A cheerful, good-natured girl who keeps the band together, but also gets teased a lot by her fellow bandmates. She is not great at reading between the lines, and her efforts can sometimes be fruitless. She is easily moved to tears when she feels touched. Himari also likes baking and comparing sweets from different convenience stores. Moca also calls her 'Hii-chan'.
- Tsugumi Hazawa (羽沢 つぐみHazawa Tsugumi)
- Voiced by: Hisako Kanemoto
- The keyboardist of Afterglow and a first-year student at Haneoka Girls' High School who is also part of their student council. The most ordinary girl in Afterglow, Tsugumi has a positive personality and doesn't sweat the small stuff. Her cheery kindness keeps the band members' spirits high. Just like Himari, she also likes baking. She helps out at her family's coffee shop. The other band members call her 'Tsugu'.
Pastel*Palettes[edit]
- An idol group who were formed into a 'idol band' as a gimmick by a talent agency. Though they initially were not expected to play their own instruments in live performances, they were ultimately permitted to perform their own music after an incident during their debut. As a result, have become popular for their originality. 'Pastel*Palettes' refers to the colorful and varied personalities of the group.
- Aya Maruyama (丸山 彩Maruyama Aya)
- Voiced by: Ami Maeshima
- The vocalist of Pastel*Palettes and a second-year student at Hanasakigawa Girls' High School. Aya is an avid admirer of idols who worked hard for 3 years before getting chosen to be the vocalist of Pastel*Palettes. She gets worked up easily and tends to cry a lot, though outwardly she's very cheery, high-spirited, and bubbly. Outside of the band, she works part-time at the fast food store together with Kanon and Tomoe. She also has weird skills such as knowing how to take a perfect selfie and wishes that people would recognize her when she's outside, which is why she doesn't wear her disguise outdoors.
- Hina Hikawa (氷川 日菜Hikawa Hina)
- Voiced by: Ari Ozawa
- The guitarist of Pastel*Palettes, a second-year student at Haneoka Girls' High School and also the younger twin sister of Sayo. Hina is a true genius, able to do just about anything after one single demonstration. She is a cheerful and candid girl, though not good at understanding the feelings of other people (especially when it comes to them working hard for their dreams), and gets easily bored. Hina also uses to weird words to describe feelings, such as 'boppin' (るん) and 'zappin' (ピピツ)'.
- Chisato Shirasagi (白鷺 千聖Shirasagi Chisato)
- Voiced by: Sumire Uesaka
- The bassist of Pastel*Palettes, a second-year student at Hanasakigawa Girls' High School, and Kaoru's childhood friend. Having been a famous actress since she was a child, Chisato has learned to cherish her private life and the friends therein. Underneath her kind and pleasant outlook, Chisato can be quite calculating and even blunt and cold at times, especially towards Kaoru's dramatic personality. Though she is seen as a role model for professionalism by the other girls, they are unaware of her hard work and effort to do well.
- Maya Yamato (大和 麻弥Yamato Maya)
- Voiced by: Ikumi Nakagami
- The drummer of Pastel*Palettes and a second-year student at Haneoka Girls' High School with glasses. Prior to joining the band, she was just a studio musician working for the agency, just brought as a replacement to the band. Happiest when surrounded by musical equipment, Maya is a true tech geek. She becomes almost impossible to stop when talking about her beloved hobby, and completely loses track of time when she starts tinkering with all kinds of parts and equipment.
- Eve Wakamiya (若宮 イヴWakamiya Eve)
- Voiced by: Sawako Hata
- The keyboardist of Pastel*Palettes and a first-year student in Kasumi's class at Hanasakigawa Girls' High School. Eve is a half-Japanese, half-Finnish, and grew up in Finland. - The guitarist of Roselia and a second-year student at Hanasakigawa Girls' High School. Serious to fault and never cuts corners. She is the older twin sister of Hina, from Pastel*Palettes, and has a bit of complex because Hina always manages to do things perfectly without trying, while Sayo always puts her 100% into everything but doesn't manage to do things as well as her. Like Yukina, she secretly loves fluffy animals. She dislikes carrots passionately because she used to eat Hina's carrots (who disliked them as well) when they were younger, and got scolded for it because she did not eat her own.
- Lisa Imai (今井 リサImai Risa)
- Voiced by: Yurika Endō(2017 - May 2018),[8]Yuki Nakashima(May 2018 - onwards)[9]

She is known to often have chuunibyou tendencies, which could be the result of the time she spent playing games online. - Rinko Shirokane (白金 燐子Shirokane Rinko)

She is usually shy and asocial, and would get scared if she was around a large crowd or people she was unfamiliar with. She does not go out much and tends to be a pessimist. In her free time, she likes to read and play online games, where she met her best friend Ako in, who also calls her 'Rin-rin'. Rinko is also skilled sewer, as she sews Roselia's costumes and also did Ako's clothes.

- Misaki Okusawa (奥沢 美咲Okusawa Misaki) / Michelle (ミッシェルMisheru)
- Voiced by: Tomoyo Kurosawa
- The DJ of the band and a first-year at Hanasakigawa Girls' High School. Under the guise of a pink bear costume she used to wear for a part-time job, she goes by the name 'Michelle' and plays as the band's DJ, while the band considers Misaki herself the composer of the band and 'Michelle's agent' or 'Michelle's friend'. Misaki is very reserved and sarcastic, and tends to react a lot to her band's crazy and wild antics, and she has a hard time staying positive no matter the situation. To her pain, none of the band members, aside from Kanon who sympathizes with her, believe that she is Michelle. Hagumi calls her 'Mii-kun'. The mobile rhythm game titled BanG Dream! Girls Band Party (バンドリ! ガールズバンドパーティ!Bandori! Gārusu Bando Pāti!) also known as Garupa is developed by Craft Egg and published by Bushiroad's Bushimo for Android and iOS platforms.[30] It was first released in Japan on March 16, 2017 while the global version was released on April 4, 2018.[31] The setting of the game mainly conforms to the world view of BanG Dream! after the first season of the TV series. In addition to the main band Poppin'Party, new and playable bands—Afterglow, Pastel*Palettes, Roselia, and Hello, Happy World!—were added.[32] The main story of the game puts the player in the role of a self-named worker at the CiRCLE live house, who aids Poppin'Party in recruiting girl bands for an event. The game also features multiple original stories for the individual bands, most of which explore the backstories of the bands and their members. The game has the main characters fully voiced and the sprites has 2.5D movement using the Live2D technology.[33]
An AR application based on the game titled Bandori! Garupa AR' was distributed since January 9, 2018 for a limited time.[34]
In March 2019, the game celebrated its 2nd anniversary by adding several new contents; one being a second season of the game's main story and advanced the characters' school years by one year, being then equal to the year for the second season of the anime.[35]
In Japan, the game grossed ¥31.2 billion ($282.55 million) between 2017 and 2018, including ¥9.1 billion in 2017,[36] and ¥22.1 billion in 2018.[37]
In 2018, the game was the 15th most successful mobile game and the second most successful rhythm game in Japan in terms of revenue, only behind The Idolmaster Cinderella Girls: Starlight Stage.[38]
