I haven't found a very good guide for this game, so let's start compiling some tips and guides here. Below are some tips that I've collected from around the web that seem to work well.
Focus on wood, bricks, and grain production in your first city. Those are the 3 primary resources that you need to train settlers and construct new buildings in your new cities as you expand. If you can also build iron and tools in your first city, all the better -- tools are usually in high demand when you're expanding.
My typical build order from the start goes:

Add +3 wood/+3 brick/+1 grain buildings to your starter city
Build 1 cart
Train a trader -- give him 5 carts (you should start with 4) and have him start trading between your main city and the independent cities
Train a builder -- have him build and improve the roads to the nearby independent cities
Train 1 settler to build a new city
Build 5 carts
Train a trader -- give him those 5 carts and have him start trading between your main city and your new city to provide it with the resources to construct the production buildings
Train 3 more settlers -- have your trader from step 7 switch to these new cities to supply them during their initial growth phase
Build 4 carts and train a trader to trade between those 4 cities (see below for 'Simple economy management')
Repeat steps 1 and 5-9 until there's no more room to expand or you don't feel like expanding any more
Build cities in groups of 4. The divine madman ebook. Each city in the group has a specialty:
City 1: Iron/Coal/Pottery/Tools/Pomp
City 2: Salt/Fish/Lumber/Bricks/Meat
City 3: Pelts/Fruit/Wool/Cloth/Clothing
City 4: Honey/Wine/Grain/Pastries/Beer
Bolded items are natural resources. You should make sure that the city has access to all of these natural resources before you build it. It will sometimes be difficult to find locations for City 1 or City 4, so sometimes a 5th city will be necessary to fill in the gaps. Only build the missing resource(s) in the 5th city, otherwise you will throw these city's economy off balance.
With this setup, your cities won't be reliant on each other for building advanced products: Everything they need is produced in the same city.
Set up a couple traders to trade between these 4 cities to keep the goods flowing between them. In particular, make sure there is a direct route from City 4 to City 1 to make sure that City 1 never runs out of food. Don't bother linking these traders to cities that aren't part of the group of 4.
Keep the building levels the same across all 4 cities and their economy will more-or-less even out (with some excess lumber, bricks, and grain, but it's good to keep a stockpile of those around). If you're going to expand one city, you need to expand the other 3 cities it's connected to at the same time.
Don't bother reaching out to the AI to establish alliances. If you give them enough time, they will reach out and pay you for the transit and trading rights. From my experience, you don't need to worry much about trading with the AI because trade between your own cities is more profitable.
Decide early on if you want to take over the independent cities that you start near. If you wait until later in the game, they become ridiculously difficult to take over peacefully.
Unless they're located in an ideal spot (see the 'Simple economy management' section), I usually ignore the independent cities because acquiring them is more trouble than they're worth.
Grand Ages: Medieval Torrent
Whenever you're expanding, have a builder ready to build roads to that new city immediately. Keep the roads linking your cities together upgraded as much as possible -- it will pay off in the long run when your traders are spending less time walking and more time earning you money.
Focus on production developments early on, especially the production developments that increase resource production. The triple production increase for honey and salt are especially good and easy to grab early on.
Once you've fully developed the production tree, you can move on to infrastructure developments. Usually military developments are the least pressing unless you're facing some serious pressure from the AI.
Scout as far as you can with your scout, and keep an eye out for adventure sites to gather resources from. If you run into bandits or wild animals, have him flee immediately and scout elsewhere. You can't easily replace your initial scout for a while, so don't lose him.
Early on in the game, build a barracks and train a couple mercenaries to clear out the adventure sites with hostile bandits or wild animals. As long as your pair of mercenaries can take care of all the bandits and wild animals in the area, don't bother building any other military. It will only be a drain on your economy, and you will have ample time to prepare for an invasion should the AI declare war on you early on.

When you've built a large army, you'll find that your conquests quickly become stalled once you take over an enemy city that doesn't have the resources to feed your troops. Come prepared -- as any wise Medieval conquerer would -- with traders loaded with food (grain, fruit, etc.) and building supplies (wood, bricks, tools) so you can load the newly-conquered city up with everything it needs and move on to conquering the next city.
